Why Early Support Matters

Early identification can connect children and families with appropriate developmental services sooner. It does not guarantee a particular outcome. Families can request early intervention evaluation without waiting for an autism diagnosis.

Earlier identification, earlier support

Interventions, services, and supports for autism are most effective when they begin as soon as possible after diagnosis. Early detection can also help caregivers decide which services, educational programs, and therapies are most likely to help their child.

Many children are identified later

CDC notes that autism can sometimes be detected at 18 months or younger, and that a diagnosis by an experienced professional by age 2 can be considered reliable. However, many children do not receive a final diagnosis until they are much older — which can delay the help they need.

You can ask for help before a diagnosis

  • Birth to 3: state early intervention programs usually provide developmental services.
  • Age 3 and older: local public school systems typically provide developmental services and support.
  • Families can refer themselves directly — a diagnosis is not required to ask for an evaluation.
Early support does not guarantee a particular outcome, and support at any age can help. If you have a concern, contact your child’s doctor or your state program.
